Bedroom installs are mostly window treatments, lighting, and storage. Most require only basic tools.
01Curtain rod installation
Mark the bracket locations — typically 4–6 inches above the window frame and 6–8 inches beyond the frame on each side. Use a level to confirm the marks are at the same height. Drill pilot holes, check for studs, and use drywall anchors rated for the rod weight if not hitting studs. Install the brackets, slide the rod into the rings or through the rod pocket, and hang.
02Ceiling fan installation
A ceiling fan replaces an existing ceiling light fixture on the same wiring — hot, neutral, and ground. If the existing box is not rated for fan support, replace it with a fan-rated box before proceeding. Connect the wires: black to black (or blue for fan light kit), white to white, ground to ground. Assemble the fan per the instructions and balance the blades if the fan wobbles after installation using the balancing kit included with most fans.
03Closet organizer system
A wire or laminate closet organizer installs into wall studs and the top wall plate. Mark stud locations and the top horizontal hanging rail position. Use a level. Drive screws into at least two studs for the main rail. Add shelf standards, shelves, and hanging rods according to the system's configuration.
04Dimmer switch
Turn off the circuit breaker. Remove the existing switch. Take a photo of the wiring before disconnecting anything. A standard single-pole dimmer replaces a single-pole switch with the same wiring. Connect the wires per the dimmer's instructions — some dimmers require a neutral wire, which older switches may not have. Confirm compatibility with LED bulbs before purchasing.
