How to Hang Bedroom Curtains

Curtains are the easiest way to transform a room from a sterile box into a sanctuary. By mounting your hardware correctly, you control the light, temperature, and privacy of your sleeping space while adding a clean architectural finish to your walls. A well-hung set of curtains makes a bedroom feel taller, wider, and significantly more polished. Done well, your curtain rod should feel like a permanent part of the house, not an afterthought. The secret lies in the precision of your measurements and the use of the right wall anchors. Once the brackets are level and the panels are hung, the curtains should drape seamlessly, creating a balanced look that frames the window rather than obscuring it.

  1. Measure High for Visual Height. Measure the window width and add 6 to 20 inches to allow the rod to extend beyond the frame. Determine your mounting height by measuring 4 to 6 inches above the top of the window casing, marking this level line with a pencil.
  2. Mark Holes Dead Level. Hold your brackets against the wall at your marked height and use a level to ensure the positions match on both sides. Use a pencil to mark the exact screw holes, ensuring you are aligned with the wall studs if possible.
  3. Anchor Into Drywall First. If your bracket screws are not hitting wood studs, drill a pilot hole for your wall anchors. Tap the anchors into the wall until they are flush with the surface.
  4. Lock Brackets Tight. Align the brackets over the anchors and drive the mounting screws in until tight. Double-check that the brackets are secure and do not wiggle when pressure is applied.
  5. Thread Panels Onto Rod. Slide your curtain panels onto the rod, ensuring the fabric folds are facing the right direction. Attach the finials to the ends of the rod to prevent the curtains from sliding off.
  6. Hang and Perfect Pleats. Set the rod into the brackets and tighten any set screws to lock the rod in place. Adjust the fabric pleats so they hang evenly across the width of the window.
