How to Install Floating Shelves

Symmetry and minimalism define the floating shelf, an architectural illusion that turns a utilitarian storage piece into a wall-mounted sculpture. When installed correctly, these shelves appear to emerge seamlessly from the drywall, holding books, decor, or plants without the visual clutter of visible metal brackets. Achieving this clean look requires more than just a level; it requires an unwavering commitment to hitting your wall studs. Because the shelf loses the support of a vertical bracket underneath, the leverage placed on the mounting bolts is significant. Do it right, and the shelf becomes as rigid as the wall itself; do it wrong, and you will eventually be staring at a sagging shelf and a torn-up patch of drywall.

Find Your Studs First. Use a stud finder to identify the centers of the wall studs where the shelf will sit. Mark these locations clearly with a pencil, ensuring they align with the pre-drilled holes in your mounting bracket.
Get It Perfectly Level. Hold the mounting bracket against the wall at the desired height. Place a carpenter's level on top of the bracket to ensure it is perfectly horizontal before marking the screw hole locations on the wall.
Pilot Holes Save the Day. Drill pilot holes into the marked stud locations using a bit slightly smaller than your mounting screws. This prevents the wood studs from splitting and makes driving the long bolts much easier.
Lock Down the Bracket. Drive the mounting screws through the bracket and into the wall studs using a drill with a high-torque clutch setting. Tighten until the bracket is flush against the wall and shows no movement.
Slide It Home. Slide the hollow body of the shelf onto the steel support rods protruding from the bracket. Push it firmly until the back of the shelf is flush against the wall surface.
Secure the Final Screws. Drive the small set screws—usually located on the underside of the shelf—upward into the support rods. This prevents the shelf from accidentally sliding off the bracket.
