How to Install Outdoor Post Lights

Landscape lighting defines the character of your deck or patio after sunset, turning dark perimeters into safe, inviting spaces. Installing post-mounted lights is a high-impact project that bridges the gap between basic utility and architectural beauty, provided you handle the electrical connections with care and precision. A job done well is invisible. The wires should be tucked neatly behind the post or within the structure, the mounts should be perfectly plumb, and the connections should be sealed against the elements. Focus on the integrity of your moisture seals at every junction to ensure your investment survives the first rainstorm.

1. Mark Your Light Positions. Mark the exact height for each light on your posts using a level to ensure visual consistency. Confirm your chosen locations are accessible for wiring and do not interfere with post structural bolts.
2. Secure Bases With Precision. Center the light base on the post and drill pilot holes to prevent the wood from splitting. Attach the base using stainless steel screws, ensuring the mounting hardware is weather-rated.
3. Hide Cables Seamlessly. Run low-voltage landscape cable along the underside of the deck railing or behind the post trim. Secure the cable with cable clips every 12 inches to prevent sagging.
4. Seal Every Wire Connection. Strip the ends of the light fixture wires and connect them to the main cable using waterproof silicone-filled wire nuts. Twist the wires together firmly to ensure a solid, corrosion-resistant connection.
5. Lock Fixtures Into Place. Attach the light housing to the mounted base according to the manufacturer's locking mechanism. Tuck all excess wire neatly into the base or post cavity.
6. Power Up Your Lights. Attach the main wire run to the low-voltage transformer terminals. Plug the transformer into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet and set your timer or photocell settings.
