How to Install a Stone Paver Patio

Patios defined by stone pavers offer a permanent, low-maintenance upgrade to any backyard, provided the foundation is handled with absolute precision. Many DIY projects fail not because of the stone itself, but because the ground underneath wasn't prepped to handle freeze-thaw cycles or water drainage, leading to sinking and shifting tiles within a few seasons. Done well, a paver patio feels solid underfoot and drains moisture away from your home's foundation effortlessly. You are building a system of layers—compacted soil, structural aggregate, sand, and stone—that works in unison to resist the weight of foot traffic and the pressure of the elements. Take your time on the base, and the surface will last a lifetime.

Slope Away, Drain Forever. Mark the perimeter of your patio using stakes and string lines, ensuring a slight slope away from the house for drainage. Dig out the soil to a depth of 8 inches plus the thickness of your pavers.
Compact the Base Stone. Fill the excavated area with 4 inches of crushed angular gravel. Use a plate compactor to drive the gravel down until it is rock-solid and level.
Level the Sand Bed Perfectly. Lay 1 inch of coarse masonry sand over your compacted gravel base. Use lengths of PVC pipe as rails to screed the sand perfectly flat and even across the entire surface.
Tap Stones Into Place. Start in a corner and place your pavers tightly against one another in your chosen pattern. Use a rubber mallet to tap each paver firmly into the sand bed without disturbing the alignment.
Lock Down the Edges. Install plastic or metal paver edging around the entire perimeter of the patio. Secure the edging to the compacted base using 10-inch steel landscape spikes driven through the pre-drilled holes.
Fill Joints, Activate, Cure. Pour polymeric sand over the patio surface and sweep it into all the gaps between the stones until full. Mist the area lightly with a hose to activate the polymers, then let it cure according to the package instructions.
