How to Install a USB Charging Outlet

Wall outlets are the unsung heroes of the modern home, yet they often struggle to keep up with our device-heavy lives. Replacing a dated receptacle with an integrated USB-charging outlet is a straightforward upgrade that streamlines your charging setup. It is a high-impact, low-cost project that immediately modernizes your living space while keeping your tech powered and ready. Done well, this installation looks factory-installed and sits perfectly flush against the wall. The key lies in managing the wiring neatly within the electrical box and ensuring every screw connection is tight. When you finish, you will have a clean, minimalist power source that eliminates the clutter of multiple AC adapters fighting for space on the same duplex.

  1. Kill the Power First. Go to your main electrical panel and switch off the breaker controlling the outlet you intend to replace. Verify the power is off by plugging in a lamp or using a non-contact voltage tester on the existing receptacle.
  2. Remove the Old Outlet. Unscrew the cover plate from the wall using a flathead screwdriver. Once removed, unscrew the receptacle from the electrical box and gently pull it out by the mounting tabs.
  3. Verify and Disconnect Wires. Use your non-contact voltage tester one last time on the wires exposed in the box to confirm zero current. Note the wire positions, then loosen the terminal screws to detach the black (hot), white (neutral), and copper (ground) wires.
  4. Strip and Straighten Wires. Straighten the ends of the existing wires if they are heavily kinked. Strip about 3/4 inch of insulation off the ends if the current wire ends look brittle or damaged.
  5. Connect by Color Code. Attach the wires to the new outlet: connect the ground wire to the green screw, the white wire to the silver screw, and the black wire to the gold or brass screw. Loop the wire clockwise under the screw head and tighten firmly.
  6. Seat and Secure Outlet. Gently fold the wires back into the box and screw the new receptacle into the wall box mounting holes. Snap or screw the new cover plate into place.
  7. Power Up and Verify. Turn the circuit breaker back on at the panel. Plug in a device to check for charging status and use a plug-in circuit tester to ensure the wiring is correct.
