How to Install a Rodent-Proof Garage Door Sweep

Garages act as the front porch for rodents, offering shelter and a direct route into your home. A standard, thin rubber sweep often fails because it cracks over time or leaves visible gaps when the garage floor is slightly uneven, providing the perfect invitation for mice to squeeze through. Installing a high-quality, pest-resistant sweep is your primary line of defense. By choosing a rigid backing material and a dense seal, you create a physical barrier that rodents find impossible to chew through or wiggle under. When done well, the sweep sits flush against the concrete, ensuring no daylight is visible beneath the door.

1. Measure Twice, Cut Once. Measure the bottom edge of your garage door from side to side. Purchase a kit that is at least two inches longer than your actual door measurement to allow for trimming.
2. Strip the Old Seal Clean. Pull the existing rubber seal out of the bottom channel or unscrew it from the door frame if it is surface-mounted. Use a putty knife to scrape away any hardened debris or old adhesive from the door edge.
3. Degrease the Door Edge. Wipe the bottom edge of the door with a degreaser or denatured alcohol to remove grit and oil. A clean surface is mandatory for the new seal to sit perfectly level.
4. Trim the Sweep Perfectly. Lay your new sweep flat and mark your cutting line using your door width measurement. Use a hacksaw to cut the aluminum backing and a utility knife to trim the rubber or brush insert.
5. Secure the Seal Straight. Position the sweep along the bottom edge so the rubber seal just barely touches the garage floor. Pre-drill pilot holes through the aluminum and into the door, then secure it with self-tapping screws.
6. Test for Light Leaks. Close the garage door and perform a light test from the inside. If you see light peeking through anywhere along the bottom, adjust the screws or add a small shim behind the mounting point.
