How to Install Overhead LED Shop Lights in Your Garage

Garages suffer from a common affliction: the solitary, dim incandescent bulb hanging in the center of the room. This outdated lighting setup creates deep shadows exactly where you need to work, turning every project into a guessing game of depth and detail. Replacing this with high-output, linkable LED shop lights transforms a dungeon-like workspace into a bright, productive environment that makes finding tools and working on engines infinitely safer. Done well, this project is less about complex wiring and more about proper layout and secure mounting. You want light distributed evenly across your primary work zones—the workbench, the vehicle bays, and the storage area. Because modern LED shop lights are lightweight and draw very little current, you can often daisy-chain several fixtures together, allowing you to light an entire garage with a single switch.

  1. Plan Light Placement First. Measure your garage ceiling and mark the location of the joists using a stud finder. Plan the placement of your LED fixtures so they run parallel to your primary work surfaces to minimize shadows.
  2. Secure Hooks Into Joists. Screw the provided eye hooks into the wooden joists at the marked intervals. If your ceiling is finished with drywall, use toggle bolts instead of standard wood screws to ensure a secure grip.
  3. Hang and Level Fixtures. Attach the provided hanging chains to the eye hooks. Hook the light fixtures onto the chains, adjusting the links until the lights are level and at your desired height from the floor.
  4. Connect Lights in Series. Use the provided linking cables to connect the power output of the first fixture to the power input of the next. Ensure all connections are pushed in firmly until they click.
  5. Plug Into Power Source. Plug the primary power cord into your ceiling or wall outlet. If your garage lacks an outlet on the ceiling, use a heavy-duty extension cord secured with cable clips along the joists to reach the nearest wall receptacle.
  6. Test and Secure Everything. Flip the switch to ensure all fixtures illuminate simultaneously. Check that no cables are sagging or interfering with garage door operation.
