How to Install Outdoor Security Lighting

Lighting serves as your first line of defense and utility for the dark corners of your home. A well-placed floodlight or task light transforms a shadowy driveway or entryway into a manageable space, deterring unwanted visitors while providing the visibility you need to navigate stairs or locks after sunset. Getting this right means ensuring every connection is watertight and properly grounded. Done well, your new fixture will sit flush against the exterior siding, shielded from the elements, and respond reliably whenever you need illumination. Avoid the temptation to take shortcuts with exterior wiring; the damp, changing climate demands high-quality materials and precise seals.

  1. Kill the Power First. Locate your home's main service panel and flip the breaker corresponding to the exterior lighting circuit. Test the existing fixture or outlet with a non-contact voltage tester to ensure the wires are truly dead before proceeding.
  2. Strip Out the Old. Unscrew the existing light cover and fixture from the junction box. Carefully disconnect the wiring and remove the old mounting bracket, ensuring no loose wires are left energized in the box.
  3. Secure the Bracket. Attach the manufacturer-provided mounting bracket to your exterior junction box using the included machine screws. Ensure the bracket is level and centered to avoid a crooked final result.
  4. Wire It Up Right. Strip back a half-inch of insulation from the fixture wires and your house wires. Connect ground to ground (green or copper), neutral to neutral (white), and hot to hot (black), securing each with a wire nut wrapped in electrical tape.
  5. Weatherproof the Seams. Apply a generous bead of silicone caulk around the top and sides of the light fixture where it meets the wall, leaving the bottom uncaulked to allow for drainage. Secure the fixture housing to the mounting plate with the provided hardware.
  6. Test and Tune Sensors. Restore power at the breaker panel and test the fixture operation. If your light has motion or dusk-to-dawn sensors, adjust the sensitivity dial and light direction to cover your target area without catching passing traffic.
