Install Slatwall Panels in Your Garage

Slatwall transforms a garage from a place where things pile up into a place where everything has a home. The grooved panels accept hooks, baskets, and shelving that you can rearrange without new holes, which means your storage system evolves as your needs do. A well-installed slatwall system keeps tools visible, bikes off the floor, and seasonal gear accessible without the avalanche risk of stacked bins. The key is mounting the panels plumb and level from the start — once the first panel is right, the rest click into place like a good day in the workshop.

1. Locate and mark studs. Use a stud finder to locate all wall studs in your installation area. Mark each stud centerline with a pencil line from floor to ceiling. Measure and confirm studs are 16 or 24 inches on center. If working on bare studs, skip this step.
2. Install horizontal furring strips. Cut 1x3 furring strips to span your wall width. Mount them horizontally across the studs at 16-inch intervals, starting 4 inches from the floor. Drive 3-inch screws through the strips into each stud. Check each strip for level before securing completely.
3. Cut first panel to height. Measure floor to ceiling and subtract 1/4 inch for clearance. Mark the slatwall panel and cut with a circular saw using a fine-tooth blade. Cut with the finished side up to minimize chipping. Sand cut edges smooth.
4. Mount the first panel. Position the first panel at your starting corner, bottom edge 2 inches off the floor. Check for plumb with a level. Drive finish nails or screws through the panel grooves into each furring strip. Start fasteners at the tongue edge where the next panel will hide them.
5. Interlock remaining panels. Slide the groove of the next panel over the tongue of the installed panel. Tap gently with a rubber mallet if needed to close gaps. Secure through grooves into furring strips. Continue across the wall, checking plumb every third panel.
6. Cut around outlets and obstacles. Measure from the edge of the last installed panel to the outlet center, then measure height from floor. Transfer measurements to the new panel and cut opening with a jigsaw. Test-fit before final installation. Install outlet box extenders if needed to bring outlets flush with new wall surface.
7. Install edge trim. Cut PVC or aluminum edge trim to fit top, bottom, and side edges of your slatwall installation. Secure with finish nails or construction adhesive. Miter corners for a clean finish at inside and outside corners.
8. Load test and install accessories. Wait 24 hours for adhesive to cure if used. Install your first hooks and brackets, placing heavier items near studs. Load gradually and check that panels remain tight to furring strips. Adjust fasteners if any panels pull away under load.
