How to Install Motion-Sensing Security Lights

Wired motion lights are the silent sentinels of the modern home. A well-placed fixture does more than just deter intruders; it provides a reliable, hands-free welcome when you arrive home with arms full of groceries or gear. The secret to a successful installation lies not just in the wiring, but in the positioning of the sensors to minimize false triggers from wind or passing traffic. Working with outdoor electrical boxes requires strict adherence to weatherproofing. Because these fixtures live in the elements, every wire nut must be tight and every gasket must sit flush. When done well, the light remains dark until you need it, and your house feels a little more secure from the moment you pull into the driveway.

  1. Kill Power First. Head to your main electrical panel and turn off the breaker feeding the outdoor light circuit. Test the current at the existing light fixture using a non-contact voltage tester before touching any wires.
  2. Document Then Detach. Unscrew the existing light fixture from the wall mounting bracket. Carefully pull it away from the wall to expose the wire nuts and the mounting box.
  3. Mount The Bracket Level. Attach the new mounting bracket provided with your sensor light to the electrical box using the included machine screws. Ensure the bracket is level and secure against the wall surface.
  4. Match Colors Precisely. Strip back 1/2 inch of insulation from the house wires if necessary. Connect the ground wire to the green or bare copper wire, white to white (neutral), and black to black (hot) using wire nuts.
  5. Weatherproof With Caulk. Carefully tuck the wires into the box and screw the light fixture base onto the mounting bracket. Apply a bead of silicone caulk around the top and sides of the fixture base where it meets the wall, leaving the bottom open for drainage.
  6. Calibrate The Sensor. Turn the breaker back on and set the sensor to 'test' mode. Walk through the desired detection zone to verify the light turns on, then adjust the timer and sensitivity dials on the sensor head.
