How to Install Wall Sconces for Ambient Lighting
Sconces are the quiet workhorses of a sophisticated lighting plan. While overhead lights wash a room in flat, singular intensity, wall-mounted fixtures create layers, adding depth and shadow that make a living room feel intentional rather than just illuminated. When done well, they act as both functional task lights and sculptural elements that frame your space. Installing them yourself requires a measured approach to both the electrical work and the wall repair. If you are starting from a blank wall, you are essentially performing surgery on your drywall to bring power exactly where it needs to live. Focus on precise placement and clean mounting, as these fixtures are usually at eye level where mistakes are impossible to hide.
- Measure and Cut Precisely. Measure the desired height for the center of the light, typically 60 to 66 inches from the floor. Use the junction box template to trace a hole on the drywall, then carefully cut the outline using a drywall saw.
- Run Power to the Wall. Fish 14/2 non-metallic cable from your power source, such as an existing switch box or receptacle, to the newly cut hole. Pull at least six inches of wire through the junction box before securing the box into the wall.
- Seat the Junction Box. Insert the electrical work box into the hole and tighten the mounting wings until it is flush and immovable against the drywall. Ensure the box is rated for fixture support if you are installing a particularly heavy sconce.
- Bond All Wires Securely. Strip the cable sheathing to expose the black, white, and ground wires. Connect them to the corresponding fixture leads using wire nuts, ensuring the ground wire is properly bonded to the fixture bracket.
- Level the Mounting Bracket. Screw the universal mounting plate provided with the sconce onto the junction box. Verify that the bracket is level, as even a slight tilt will be obvious once the fixture body is attached.
- Finish and Seal the Gap. Tuck the connected wires carefully into the junction box, then place the sconce canopy over the mounting plate. Tighten the decorative cap nuts to hold the fixture firmly against the wall surface.
