How to Securely Mount a Television Wall Bracket
Television mounting transforms your living room, reclaiming floor space and providing a clean, professional aesthetic. The primary objective isn't just getting the screen on the wall, but ensuring the hardware is anchored deep into the structural framing of your home so it remains static and secure for years. Done well, this project is invisible. The mount is perfectly level, the fasteners are buried in solid wood, and the cables are hidden. There is no wobbling, no leaning, and most importantly, no risk of your investment coming down. Precision during the initial layout phase is the difference between a five-minute job and a frustrating afternoon of patching drywall.
- Find the Wall's Backbone. Use a stud finder to locate the center of two adjacent wall studs. Mark the vertical center line of each stud with a pencil at your desired mounting height.
- Get Level Right Now. Hold the wall plate against the wall, aligning the mounting holes with your pencil marks. Use a bubble level to ensure the bracket is perfectly horizontal before marking the drill points.
- Drill True, Not Deep. Use a drill bit slightly smaller than the shank of your lag bolts to drill into the center of the marked stud locations. Ensure the drill stays perpendicular to the wall surface to prevent the bolt from wandering.
- Lock the Plate Down. Drive the provided lag bolts through the wall plate holes and into the studs using a socket wrench. Tighten until snug, but avoid overtightening, which can strip the wood fibers.
- Bolt Brackets to Screen. Lay your TV face down on a soft, flat surface like a bed or a blanket. Attach the two vertical mounting brackets to the back of the TV using the manufacturer-specified screws and spacers.
- Secure the Screen Safely. Lift the TV onto the wall plate, hooking the brackets into the plate's channel. Tighten any integrated safety screws at the bottom of the brackets to lock the unit to the plate.
