How to Install Garage Wall Storage
Installing garage wall storage involves locating wall studs, mounting a track system or brackets to the studs, and adding shelves, hooks, or bins to organize your items efficiently.
- Map Your Storage Vision. Measure your garage walls and decide what you need to store. Sketch a rough layout showing where shelves, hooks, and bins will go. Keep frequently used items at eye level and leave space for your car doors to open fully. Check for electrical outlets, switches, and garage door tracks that you'll need to work around.
- Find the Foundation Points. Use a stud finder to locate the wall studs, which are typically spaced 16 or 24 inches apart. Mark each stud location with a pencil. For heavy-duty storage, you must anchor into studs rather than just drywall. If your garage has exposed studs, this step is already done for you.
- Anchor Brackets Into Studs. Hold your track system or bracket against the wall at your desired height, ensuring it's level. Mark the screw holes that align with studs. Drill pilot holes slightly smaller than your screws to prevent splitting. Secure the track or brackets using 3-inch wood screws driven into the studs. Check that everything is firmly attached before proceeding.
- Layer In Your Storage. Install shelves, hooks, and bins according to your layout plan. Most systems use clips or brackets that slide into the track. Start with larger items like shelves, then add hooks for tools and bins for smaller items. Distribute weight evenly across multiple studs and avoid overloading any single bracket.
- Load and Fine-Tune. Gently test each shelf and hook by applying pressure before loading them with items. Start placing your belongings, putting heavier items on lower shelves and distributing weight evenly. Step back and adjust the arrangement as needed to maximize both storage and accessibility.
