How to Install Board and Batten on Walls

Board and batten installation involves mounting vertical boards over horizontal battens to create a classic paneled wall look. The process takes 1-2 days and requires basic carpentry skills.

  1. Map Your Wall First. Measure the wall height and width, then decide on board spacing. Traditional board and batten uses boards spaced 12-16 inches apart. Mark stud locations with a stud finder and snap chalk lines to ensure straight installation. Account for outlets and switches in your layout.
  2. Set the Rail Straight. Cut a 1x4 or 1x6 board to span the wall width. Install this horizontal rail at your desired height, typically 32-36 inches from the floor. Use a level to ensure it's perfectly straight, then secure to wall studs with 2.5-inch screws every 16 inches.
  3. Build the Frame Grid. Cut vertical boards to run from the horizontal rail to the floor. Use a miter saw for clean, square cuts. Install each board by drilling pilot holes and securing with 2-inch finish nails or screws into the horizontal rail and bottom plate. Check each board with a level before final attachment.
  4. Fill the Gaps Evenly. Cut thin battens (typically 1x2 or 1x3) to fit between the horizontal rail and floor. Center each batten between the vertical boards. Attach with 1.5-inch finish nails, ensuring they're plumb and evenly spaced.
  5. Crown the Horizontal Rail. Cut cap molding or a wider board to top the horizontal rail. This covers the rail and creates a finished ledge appearance. Miter corners for inside and outside edges, then attach with finish nails into the rail below.
  6. Smooth Every Imperfection. Fill all nail holes and gaps with wood filler. Allow to dry completely, then sand smooth with 120-grit sandpaper. Wipe clean with a tack cloth to remove all dust before finishing.
  7. Paint for Lasting Style. Apply primer to all wood surfaces, paying attention to end grain and joints. Once dry, apply two coats of your chosen paint, using a brush for detail work and a roller for larger surfaces. Allow proper drying time between coats.
