How to Remove Old Wallpaper Without Damaging Walls

Remove old wallpaper by scoring the surface, applying warm water or wallpaper remover, then scraping gently with a putty knife while the adhesive is soft.

  1. Clear and Protect First. Remove furniture and lay plastic sheeting on floors. Turn off electricity to switches and outlets, then cover them with painter's tape. Test wallpaper removal in an inconspicuous corner by peeling a small section to see if it comes off easily or requires more aggressive methods.
  2. Perforate for Penetration. Use a wallpaper scoring tool or utility knife to create small perforations across the entire wall surface. Make light, overlapping circular motions with the scoring tool, being careful not to press too hard and damage the drywall underneath. This allows removal solution to penetrate behind the wallpaper.
  3. Saturate and Wait Patiently. Mix hot water with liquid fabric softener (1 part softener to 2 parts water) or use commercial wallpaper remover. Apply generously with a spray bottle or sponge, working from bottom to top. Let the solution soak for 15-20 minutes to soften the adhesive. Reapply if areas start to dry out.
  4. Strip with Shallow Angles. Starting at a corner or seam, use a putty knife or wallpaper scraper to gently remove the wallpaper. Work at a 30-degree angle and keep the blade flat against the wall. Remove wallpaper in strips when possible, reapplying solution to stubborn areas. Never force or dig the scraper into the wall.
  5. Eliminate All Adhesive Traces. Remove adhesive residue with the same solution used for removal, scrubbing gently with a sponge. For stubborn spots, try a paste of baking soda and water. Rinse the entire wall with clean water and allow to dry completely before proceeding with new wall treatments.
  6. Patch and Prime Walls. Fill small gouges or holes with lightweight spackle using a putty knife. Sand smooth once dry and spot-prime any repaired areas. If you discover extensive damage, you may need to apply primer to the entire wall before painting or hanging new wallpaper.
