How to Organize Under the Kitchen Sink

CABINETS under the kitchen sink are notorious for becoming dark, cramped graveyards for half-empty spray bottles and leaking sponges. Because this space houses plumbing drains and garbage disposals, it is often ignored until a leak forces a cleanup, leading to a disorganized mess that makes finding a simple dish soap bottle a chore. Transforming this area isn't just about making it look tidy; it is about reclaiming functional storage space in the hardest-working room of the house. Done well, you will have a clear view of your inventory, easy access to your cleaning supplies, and enough clearance to reach shut-off valves without moving three heavy buckets out of the way.

  1. Clear the Clutter First. Empty the entire cabinet. Toss any expired cleaning products, recycle empty containers, and wipe down the floor and walls with a mild degreaser to ensure a clean surface.
  2. Know Your Pipe Layout. Measure the height of the bottom of the sink basin and the pipes, noting where the garbage disposal sits. Use these measurements to select organizers that won't strike the pipes when pulled out.
  3. Mount Drawers Low. Secure a sliding drawer unit to the floor of the cabinet. Always mount these to the bottom surface to ensure stability when the drawers are fully extended.
  4. Stack Smart, Not High. Install a tiered rack that fits around the plumbing pipes to maximize vertical space. This prevents bottles from being stacked on top of each other.
  5. Maximize Door Real Estate. Attach a small wire basket or adhesive hook to the inside of the cabinet door for sponges, scrub brushes, or rubber gloves. Keep items lightweight to avoid pulling the hinge screws loose.
  6. Label and Maintain Order. Group like items together in bins before placing them back into the cabinet. Place frequently used items at the front for easy access.
