How to Fix a Running or Leaking Toilet
Toilet trouble is the classic homeowner rite of passage, usually signaled by the persistent, ghostly sound of running water in the middle of the night. A toilet that won't stop filling isn't just an annoyance; it is a direct drain on your water bill and a strain on your septic or sewer system. The internal mechanics of a toilet tank are remarkably simple, relying on gravity and basic buoyancy to keep the system sealed. Done well, this repair replaces worn rubber components or recalibrates the water level, ensuring a crisp, clean flush every time. You do not need to be a plumber to master the tank guts; you only need to understand how the flapper seals the drain and how the fill valve regulates the supply. We will walk through the diagnostic steps to identify the culprit and get your bathroom back to silence.
- Cut the Water First. Locate the shut-off valve on the wall behind the toilet and turn it clockwise until it stops. Flush the toilet to drain the tank completely, allowing you to see the components clearly.
- Find the Real Problem. Reach into the tank and lift the rubber flapper at the bottom. Check the rim for mineral buildup or warping that might prevent a watertight seal.
- Fine-Tune the Chain. Ensure the chain connecting the flush lever to the flapper has a slight amount of slack. If the chain is too short, it will pull the flapper open; if it is too long, it may get caught under the flapper.
- Swap in New Rubber. If the rubber is brittle or misshapen, detach the old flapper from the pins on the overflow tube. Attach the new flapper, ensuring it is centered over the drain opening.
- Set the Water Height. If the water is constantly flowing into the overflow tube, the float is set too high. Rotate the adjustment screw on the fill valve to lower the float ball or slide the adjustment clip down the rod.
- Test for Total Victory. Turn the water supply back on slowly and watch the tank fill. Observe the flapper and fill valve to ensure the water shuts off cleanly once the tank reaches the proper level.
