How to Fix a Broken Towel Bar

Most broken towel bars can be fixed by tightening loose screws, replacing stripped anchors, or reattaching brackets with proper wall anchors for your wall type.

  1. Identify the Problem First. Remove the towel bar completely and examine both the bar itself and the wall mounts. Look for loose screws, stripped screw holes, cracked brackets, or a bent towel bar. This tells you whether you need to repair the mounting system, replace hardware, or fix the bar itself.
  2. Start with the Simplest Solution. If screws are simply loose, remove them completely and check if the holes are still solid. Clean out any debris, then reinstall the screws with a screwdriver. Don't overtighten as this can strip the holes. Test the bar by gently pulling on it before hanging towels.
  3. Restore Solid Mounting Points. For stripped holes in drywall, remove the old anchor completely. Fill the hole with spackling paste and let it dry completely. Drill a new pilot hole slightly offset from the original location and install a new drywall anchor rated for at least 50 pounds. For stripped holes in tile, use a masonry bit to clean out debris and install a new wall anchor designed for tile.
  4. Swap Out Broken Hardware. If brackets are cracked or bent, take one to the hardware store to find matching replacements. Many towel bars use standard mounting systems, so you might find exact matches or compatible alternatives. Install new brackets using the existing holes if they're in good condition, or create new mounting points if needed.
  5. Save Salvageable Bars. For minor bends in the bar itself, carefully straighten it by hand or use padded pliers to avoid scratching. Work slowly to prevent cracking. If the bar is severely bent or the mounting mechanism inside is damaged, replace the entire bar assembly.
  6. Lock It Down and Verify. Mount the brackets securely to the wall, ensuring they're level and properly spaced. Slide or clip the towel bar into place according to your specific model's design. Test the installation by hanging a heavy towel and gently tugging to ensure everything holds firm.
