How to Troubleshoot and Fix Flickering Vanity Lights
Flickering is more than just an annoyance; it is a signal from your electrical system that something isn't making a solid connection. In a bathroom environment, where moisture and frequent usage take a toll on hardware, the culprit is often a simple loose component that has worked itself free over time. Most of the time, this is a minor maintenance task you can resolve in minutes without calling an electrician. Done well, your lighting will be steady, clear, and perfectly functional. We approach this by ruling out the easiest points of failure—the bulbs and the contacts—before moving into the wiring itself. Safety is the priority here, so always ensure the power is cut at the breaker before reaching for a screwdriver or touching internal components.
- Tighten Every Bulb First. Turn off the light and let the bulbs cool completely. Ensure each bulb is screwed firmly into its socket; a loose bulb is the most common cause of flickering in vanity fixtures.
- Match Bulbs to Dimmer. Check if your bulbs are rated for use with your wall dimmer switch. Using a non-dimmable LED bulb on a dimmer circuit will cause rapid flickering or pulsing.
- Restore Socket Contact. With the power off, look inside the socket for the small metal tab at the bottom. Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to gently pry it upward by an eighth of an inch to ensure it makes contact with the bulb base.
- Secure All Wire Nuts. Remove the fixture base plate from the wall to expose the wire nuts. Ensure all wire connections are tight and that no copper is exposed beyond the wire nut.
- Swap the Dimmer Switch. If the flickering persists, the dimmer switch itself may be failing. Replace the old dimmer with a new LED-compatible switch designed specifically for the wattage of your fixture.
- Verify the Fix Works. After tightening connections and verifying components, turn the breaker back on. Observe the lights for several minutes to ensure the flickering has ceased.
