How to Fix Loose Ceramic Tiles
Remove the loose tile, clean off old adhesive, apply new tile adhesive, and press the tile back into place with proper spacing.
- Gently Pry Without Cracking. Use a putty knife or chisel to gently pry up the loose tile. Work slowly around the edges to avoid cracking the tile or damaging surrounding tiles. If the tile is only slightly loose, try tapping it gently to see if it will pop up easily.
- Strip All Old Adhesive. Scrape off all old adhesive from both the back of the tile and the wall or floor surface using a putty knife. Remove any debris, dust, or loose material. The surfaces must be completely clean and dry for the new adhesive to bond properly.
- Spread Fresh Adhesive Evenly. Spread a thin, even layer of tile adhesive on the back of the tile using a notched trowel or putty knife. For wall tiles, also apply adhesive to the wall surface. Use only enough adhesive to create good contact without excess squeezing out.
- Press and Align With Care. Carefully place the tile back in its original position, aligning it with surrounding tiles. Press firmly and evenly across the entire surface, using a slight twisting motion to ensure good contact. Use tile spacers if needed to maintain proper gaps.
- Wipe Clean and Wait. Immediately wipe away any adhesive that squeezes out from the edges using a damp cloth. Avoid walking on floor tiles or disturbing wall tiles for at least 24 hours while the adhesive cures completely.
- Seal the Joint Gaps. Once the adhesive has cured, remove old grout around the tile edges if it's damaged. Mix fresh grout and apply it to fill the joints completely, then wipe clean with a damp sponge after 15-20 minutes.
