How to Replace a Bathroom Light Fixture

Lighting defines the utility of a bathroom, turning a utilitarian space into a functional room for morning routines. Over time, fixtures collect dust, rust, or simply look dated, making their replacement one of the most effective ways to refresh the space without a total renovation. Done well, this project is straightforward and safe. You are looking for a secure mechanical connection to the wall or ceiling and a flawless electrical splice. When the fixture sits flush against the surface and the light operates without flickering, you have succeeded.

  1. Kill the Power First. Head to your breaker panel and switch off the circuit powering the bathroom light. Verify the power is off by flipping the light switch on and off or using a non-contact voltage tester on the fixture cover.
  2. Extract the Old Fixture. Unscrew the decorative nuts or screws holding the current fixture in place and gently pull it away from the wall. Support the weight of the fixture while you unscrew the wire nuts connecting it to the house wiring.
  3. Level the Mounting Bracket. Unscrew the old mounting plate from the junction box and inspect the box for damage. Attach the new mounting bracket provided with your new fixture using the existing screws.
  4. Secure Ground First. Identify the copper or green ground wire on the new fixture and secure it to the ground wire (or the green grounding screw) in the junction box. Use a wire nut to lock the connection in place.
  5. Connect All Power Lines. Connect the white (neutral) wire from the fixture to the white wire in the wall, then the black (hot) wire to the black house wire. Twist them together securely and cover each set with a wire nut.
  6. Seat and Secure Fixture. Tuck the wires neatly into the junction box and press the fixture base against the wall. Secure the fixture with the provided hardware and install the bulbs or glass shades.
