How to Reset a Tripped Circuit Breaker

Turn the tripped breaker fully OFF, then firmly push it back to ON. If it trips again immediately, you have an electrical problem that needs investigation.

  1. Find Your Electrical Panel First. Find your home's main electrical panel, usually located in a basement, utility room, garage, or outside wall. Remove the panel cover if needed to access the breakers clearly.
  2. Spot the Offending Switch. Look for a breaker switch that's in the middle position between ON and OFF, or one that's moved to OFF. Tripped breakers often stick out slightly from the others and may show a red indicator window.
  3. Push All the Way Off. Push the tripped breaker firmly to the OFF position. You should feel it click into place. This step is crucial - you must go to OFF first before you can properly reset it.
  4. Flip It Back On. Push the breaker firmly from OFF to ON. You should hear and feel a definite click. The breaker should now sit flush with the others and any red indicator should disappear.
  5. Confirm Power Is Back. Go to the affected area and test outlets, switches, or appliances that weren't working. Everything should now have power. If the breaker trips again immediately, turn off all devices on that circuit and try resetting once more.
  6. Identify the Root Cause. If the breaker keeps tripping, unplug everything on that circuit and reset the breaker. Add devices back one at a time to identify what's causing the problem. A consistently tripping breaker indicates an overloaded circuit or electrical fault.
