How to Fix a Loose Vinyl Plank

Most loose vinyl planks can be fixed by cleaning the subfloor, applying new adhesive, and pressing the plank back down with weight for 24 hours.

  1. Find Every Loose Spot. Walk around the loose plank and press down on different sections to determine exactly where it's lifting. Mark the loose edges with painter's tape. Check if multiple planks are affected or if it's just one section.
  2. Strip Away Old Mess. Carefully lift the loose edge of the vinyl plank. Use a putty knife if needed, but work gently to avoid tearing. Remove any dirt, debris, or old adhesive from both the subfloor and the back of the plank using a damp cloth or vacuum.
  3. Spread Adhesive Thin. Squeeze a thin, even line of vinyl flooring adhesive along the loose edge of the plank and onto the clean subfloor. Use a notched trowel or putty knife to spread it evenly. Don't use too much - excess adhesive will squeeze out when pressed.
  4. Lock Plank Into Place. Lower the plank back into position, starting from one end and working across to avoid air bubbles. Press down firmly with your hands, then use a rubber mallet and tapping block to ensure complete contact with the adhesive.
  5. Let Adhesive Set Hard. Place heavy books, weights, or a concrete block over the repaired area. Leave the weight in place for 24 hours to allow the adhesive to cure properly. Avoid walking on the area during this time.
  6. Verify the Repair Holds. Remove the weights and test the repair by pressing down on the previously loose area. Clean any excess adhesive that may have squeezed out with a damp cloth before it fully hardens.
