How to Repair a Chip in Ceramic Tile
Small ceramic tile chips can be repaired using ceramic touch-up paint or epoxy filler, while larger chips may require tile replacement.
- Clean Before You Repair. Remove any loose ceramic pieces with tweezers and clean the chipped area with rubbing alcohol. Let it dry completely. This ensures proper adhesion for your repair material.
- Size Up Your Strategy. For chips smaller than a dime, use ceramic touch-up paint or nail polish that matches your tile color. For larger chips up to quarter-size, use two-part epoxy filler. Chips larger than a quarter typically require tile replacement.
- Fill the Gap Fast. For small chips, dab touch-up paint into the depression using a small brush or toothpick. For larger chips, mix epoxy according to package directions and press it into the chip with a putty knife, slightly overfilling the area.
- Scrape Flush Immediately. While the material is still workable, use a razor blade or putty knife to scrape away excess material until it's flush with the tile surface. Work quickly as epoxy sets fast.
- Wait, Then Refine. Allow 24 hours for full curing. If the repair dried slightly raised, sand gently with fine-grit sandpaper until smooth. Clean away all dust.
- Match the Original Shine. If your tile has a glossy finish, apply clear nail polish or ceramic sealer over the repair. For matte tiles, leave as-is. The repair should blend seamlessly with the surrounding tile.
