How to Repair Scratched Hardwood Floors Without Sanding

Most hardwood floor scratches can be repaired using wood stain markers, wax sticks, or polyurethane touch-ups depending on the scratch depth and severity.

  1. Know Your Scratch Type. Run your fingernail across the scratch. If your nail catches in the groove, it's a deep scratch that penetrates the wood. If it glides smoothly over, it's a surface scratch in the finish only. Surface scratches are easier to fix and require different methods than deep scratches.
  2. Clear the Damage Zone. Use a clean, damp cloth to remove all dirt, dust, and debris from the scratch and surrounding area. Let it dry completely before proceeding. Any particles left behind will interfere with your repair and create an uneven finish.
  3. Polish Away Surface Marks. For light surface scratches, apply a small amount of hardwood floor polish or restorer to a clean cloth. Rub it into the scratch following the wood grain direction. The polish fills minor scratches and restores the protective coating. Buff with a clean cloth until the area matches the surrounding floor's sheen.
  4. Wax Out the Gouge. Choose a wax stick that matches your floor color as closely as possible. Rub the wax stick directly into the scratch, filling it completely. Use a plastic putty knife to smooth the wax level with the floor surface. Remove excess wax with a clean cloth, then buff the area to restore shine.
  5. Stain and Seal the Wound. For scratches that penetrate the wood, use a wood stain marker that matches your floor color. Apply the marker along the scratch, following the wood grain. Allow it to penetrate for a few minutes, then wipe away excess with a clean cloth. Apply a thin coat of clear polyurethane over the repaired area using a small brush.
  6. Lock in the Repair. Once any stain or filler has dried completely, apply a thin layer of polyurethane finish that matches your floor's sheen level. Use a small artist's brush to apply it only to the repaired area, feathering the edges to blend with the existing finish. Allow to dry according to manufacturer's instructions.
  7. Match the Shine. After the finish has cured for 24 hours, lightly buff the repaired area with fine steel wool or a soft cloth to blend the sheen with the surrounding floor. Clean the area with a damp cloth to remove any residue, then apply your regular floor care product to the entire section for uniform appearance.
