How to Fix a Leaky Shower Head

Most leaky shower heads can be fixed by cleaning mineral deposits from the face or replacing worn internal washers and O-rings.

  1. Stop the Water First. Shut off the water to your shower at the main valve or individual shower controls. Turn on the shower briefly to drain any remaining water from the pipes.
  2. Unscrew with Care. Unscrew the shower head by turning it counterclockwise with your hands. If it's stuck, wrap the connection with a cloth and use adjustable pliers. Be gentle to avoid damaging the finish.
  3. Dissolve the Buildup. Soak the shower head in white vinegar for 2-4 hours to dissolve mineral buildup. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the holes and internal components. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  4. Swap the Seals. Remove the rubber washers and O-rings from inside the shower head connection. Take them to your hardware store to find exact replacements. Install the new components in the same position as the old ones.
  5. Seal the Threads. Wind plumber's tape clockwise around the shower arm threads 2-3 times. This creates a watertight seal and prevents future leaks at the connection point.
  6. Reattach and Check. Thread the shower head back onto the arm by hand, then tighten with pliers if needed. Turn the water back on and test for leaks. Check both the face of the shower head and the connection point.
