How to Unclog a Drain Without Chemicals

Most drain clogs can be cleared using a plunger, drain snake, or simple hot water and dish soap combination without harsh chemicals.

  1. Melt the Blockage First. Boil a large pot of water and pour it slowly down the drain in 2-3 stages, allowing it to work for a few seconds between pours. This often dissolves soap buildup and minor blockages, especially in kitchen sinks.
  2. Lubricate Your Way Through. Squirt a generous amount of liquid dish soap down the drain, followed by hot water. Let it sit for 20 minutes, then flush with more hot water. The soap acts as a lubricant to help break up grease and grime.
  3. Plunge With Real Power. Remove the drain stopper if possible. Fill the sink with enough water to cover the plunger cup. Place the plunger over the drain and pump vigorously 15-20 times. The suction and pressure can dislodge most clogs.
  4. Pull Out What You See. Put on rubber gloves and remove any hair, food particles, or soap buildup you can see and reach. This is often all that's needed for bathroom sink and tub drains.
  5. Snake Through the Clog. Feed the snake into the drain while turning the handle clockwise. When you feel resistance, you've hit the clog. Keep turning and push through, then pull back to extract debris. Flush with hot water when finished.
  6. Fizz It Out Naturally. Pour one cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by one cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain with a stopper or wet cloth for 15 minutes, then flush with hot water. This creates a fizzing action that can break up organic clogs.
  7. Disassemble and Clear. Place a bucket under the P-trap beneath the sink. Unscrew the slip nuts by hand or with pliers. Remove the trap, clean out debris, and reinstall. This tackles clogs that are deeper in the pipe system.
