How to Deep Clean Your Dishwasher Inside and Out
Deep clean your dishwasher by running empty cycles with white vinegar and baking soda, then scrubbing filters, spray arms, and door seals by hand.
- Empty Everything First. Remove all dishes, utensils, and dishware. Take out the bottom dish rack and any removable parts like cutlery holders. This gives you full access to all the components that need cleaning.
- Scrub the Filter Clean. Unscrew the cylindrical filter at the bottom of the dishwasher tub. Rinse it under hot water and scrub with an old toothbrush to remove food particles and grease buildup. If it's heavily soiled, soak it in warm soapy water for 10 minutes before scrubbing.
- Unclog the Spray Arms. Pop out the lower spray arm by lifting it straight up. For upper arms, you may need to unscrew or twist to remove. Rinse under hot water and use a toothpick or thin wire to clear any clogs in the holes. Shake them to dislodge stubborn debris.
- Attack the Grime Zones. Wipe down the entire door, paying special attention to the rubber seals around the edges where grime accumulates. Use a damp cloth with mild dish soap, and an old toothbrush for stubborn spots. Clean both sides of the door and the area where it meets the tub.
- Deploy the Vinegar Cycle. Place a dishwasher-safe bowl filled with 2 cups of white vinegar on the top rack. Run a full hot water cycle without any detergent. The vinegar will break down grease, soap scum, and mineral deposits throughout the system.
- Finish with Baking Soda. Sprinkle 1 cup of baking soda across the bottom of the empty tub. Run another full hot cycle. This neutralizes odors and helps remove any remaining stains. The combination of vinegar and baking soda tackles different types of buildup.
- Polish the Exterior. Wipe down the outside with appropriate cleaner for your dishwasher's finish. For stainless steel, use a microfiber cloth and stainless steel cleaner, wiping with the grain. For other finishes, use mild soap and water. Clean the control panel gently with a barely damp cloth.
- Put It Back Together. Put the filter back in place and screw it down securely. Reinstall the spray arms, ensuring they spin freely. Replace the bottom rack and any removed components. Run a quick rinse cycle to make sure everything is properly seated and functioning.
