How to Keep Your Garbage Disposal Fresh and Odor-Free
Maintain your garbage disposal by running cold water during use, grinding ice cubes weekly to clean blades, and using baking soda and vinegar monthly to eliminate odors and buildup.
- Cold Water Is Your Best Friend. Always run cold water before, during, and for 15 seconds after using your garbage disposal. Cold water solidifies grease and oils, making them easier to chop up and flush away. Hot water melts fats, which then coat the disposal walls and create odor-causing buildup.
- Sharpen Blades the Natural Way. Drop a handful of ice cubes into the disposal and run it for 30 seconds with cold water. The ice sharpens the blades and knocks off stuck food particles. Add a cup of rock salt with the ice for extra scrubbing power to remove stubborn residue.
- Neutralize Odors at the Source. Pour half a cup of baking soda down the disposal, followed by one cup of white vinegar. Let it foam and sit for 10 minutes to break down grease and neutralize odors. Flush with cold water while running the disposal for 30 seconds to clear everything out.
- Make It Smell Like Citrus. Once a week, grind small pieces of lemon, lime, or orange peels to naturally freshen your disposal. The citrus oils coat the grinding chamber and leave a clean scent. Cut peels into small strips to avoid jamming the mechanism.
- Attack Hidden Odor Traps. Lift the rubber splash guard and scrub both sides with an old toothbrush dipped in dish soap. Food particles and grease accumulate here and cause persistent odors. Rinse thoroughly and replace the flaps when finished.
- Know What to Never Grind. Never put grease, coffee grounds, eggshells, fibrous vegetables like celery, bones, or starchy foods like rice down the disposal. These items either damage the blades, clog the drain, or create odor-causing buildup that regular cleaning cannot remove.
