How to Buff Scratches Out of Laminate Flooring

Most laminate floor scratches can be buffed out using toothpaste, baking soda paste, or specialized laminate repair products applied with gentle circular motions.

  1. Start with a Clean Surface. Sweep and mop the scratched section to remove all dirt and debris. Let the floor dry completely before proceeding. Any particles left behind will make scratches worse during buffing.
  2. Know What You're Dealing With. Run your fingernail across the scratch. If your nail catches, the scratch is too deep for simple buffing and needs filler. If your nail glides smoothly over it, you can buff it out.
  3. Coat the Damage. For light scratches, use whitening toothpaste applied directly to the scratch. For slightly deeper marks, mix baking soda with a few drops of water to form a thick paste. Apply a small amount directly onto the scratch.
  4. Smooth It Out Gently. Using a clean, soft cloth, gently rub the compound into the scratch using small circular motions. Apply light pressure and work for 30-60 seconds. The abrasive action will gradually smooth out the scratch.
  5. Reveal Your Results. Wipe the area clean with a damp cloth to remove all compound residue. Dry immediately with a clean towel. Check if the scratch is gone or needs another treatment.
  6. Know When to Stop. For stubborn scratches, repeat the process up to three times. If the scratch remains visible after three attempts, it likely needs professional repair or replacement of that plank.
