How to Clean Grout Without Scrubbing

Use a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, let it sit for 10 minutes, then spray with vinegar and wipe clean with a damp cloth.

  1. Mix Your Magic Paste. Combine three parts baking soda with one part hydrogen peroxide to create a thick paste. The consistency should be similar to toothpaste. This mixture will penetrate grout stains and break them down without requiring aggressive scrubbing.
  2. Coat Every Grout Line. Use an old toothbrush or your finger to spread the paste along the grout lines. Make sure to cover all stained areas completely. The paste will cling to vertical surfaces, so don't worry about it sliding off.
  3. Let Chemistry Do the Work. Allow the paste to sit for 10-15 minutes. You'll see it start to bubble slightly as the hydrogen peroxide activates. This chemical reaction lifts dirt and stains from deep within the porous grout.
  4. Trigger the Fizz. Fill a spray bottle with undiluted white vinegar and spray over the baking soda paste. The vinegar will react with the baking soda, creating a fizzing action that further loosens embedded dirt and grime.
  5. Wipe Away the Grime. After the fizzing stops, use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe away the paste and loosened dirt. Work in sections and rinse your cloth frequently in clean water. The grout should come clean without any scrubbing motion.
  6. Rinse, Dry, and Shine. Use a clean, damp cloth to remove any remaining residue, then dry the area with a towel. For extra shine, you can spray the clean grout with a 50-50 water and vinegar solution and buff dry.
