How to Clean and Maintain Hardwood Floors Properly
Regular sweeping, weekly damp mopping with wood-specific cleaners, and periodic deep cleaning will keep your hardwood floors looking beautiful and extend their lifespan for decades.
- Stop Scratches Before They Start. Sweep or vacuum your hardwood floors daily to prevent dirt and grit from scratching the surface. Use a soft-bristled broom or a vacuum with a hardwood floor attachment. Avoid vacuums with beater bars that can damage the finish.
- Restore Shine With Purpose. Mop floors weekly using a barely damp microfiber mop and a pH-neutral hardwood floor cleaner. Spray the cleaner directly onto the floor in 3-foot sections, then immediately mop with the grain of the wood. Never let water pool on the surface.
- Water Damage Waits for No One. Clean up any liquid spills within minutes to prevent water damage and staining. Blot spills with a clean, dry cloth, then clean the area with a slightly damp cloth and dry thoroughly. For sticky substances, use a wood floor cleaner on a cloth.
- Shield Floors From Daily Wear. Place doormats at entrances and area rugs in high-traffic zones like hallways and kitchen entrances. Use furniture pads under all furniture legs and replace them when they wear down. Remove shoes or use house slippers to minimize scratches.
- Climate Control Prevents Disaster. Maintain indoor humidity between 30-50% year-round using a humidifier in winter and dehumidifier in summer. Wood expands and contracts with humidity changes, and extreme fluctuations can cause gaps, cupping, or crowning.
- Catch Problems Early. Inspect your floors monthly for scratches, worn areas, or loose boards. Touch up minor scratches with wood markers or scratch repair products. Schedule professional refinishing when the finish becomes dull or worn through to bare wood in multiple areas.
