How to Maintain a Sump Pump

Maintain your sump pump by testing it quarterly, cleaning the pit annually, checking the float switch, and inspecting the discharge pipe for clogs or damage.

  1. Verify Pump Activation Now. Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit until the float rises and triggers the pump. The pump should start immediately and remove the water within seconds. If it doesn't activate or struggles to pump water, you need repairs or replacement.
  2. Clear Debris and Buildup. Unplug the pump and remove it from the pit. Clear out any debris, gravel, or sediment that has accumulated. Rinse the pit walls with a garden hose and scrub away any mineral buildup or slime. This prevents clogs and reduces strain on the pump motor.
  3. Free Up Float Movement. Check that the float moves freely up and down without catching on the pump housing or pit walls. Clean any debris from the float mechanism. If the float sticks or the switch appears damaged, replace it immediately since a faulty float switch will prevent the pump from activating during floods.
  4. Clear All Discharge Routes. Trace the discharge pipe from the pump to where it exits your property. Look for cracks, loose connections, or blockages. Remove any debris from the pipe opening. Make sure the pipe slopes away from your foundation and that water flows freely when you test the pump.
  5. Confirm Backup Readiness. If you have a battery backup system, disconnect the main power and verify the backup pump activates when water levels rise. Check battery terminals for corrosion and ensure the battery holds a full charge. Replace backup batteries every 3-5 years even if they appear functional.
  6. Oil Lubrication Points. Apply a few drops of pump oil to any lubrication points specified in your pump's manual. Most modern pumps are sealed and don't require lubrication, but older models may have grease fittings or oil caps that need attention annually.
