How to Clean Blinds Without Taking Them Down

Clean blinds in place using a microfiber cloth, vacuum brush attachment, or damp cloth to remove dust and grime while they hang on your windows.

  1. Lock Down the Slats. Turn the tilt wand or pull cord to close the blinds fully in one direction. This creates a flat surface that's easier to clean and ensures you can reach every slat without gaps.
  2. Suck Out the Dust. Use your vacuum's brush attachment on low suction to remove loose dust, pet hair, and debris. Work from top to bottom, following the direction of the slats. This prevents dust from falling onto already-cleaned areas.
  3. Grab Every Grain. Starting at the top, place a dry microfiber cloth over each slat and gently pull it across the entire length. The cloth will grab dust and static particles. Work systematically from left to right, top to bottom.
  4. Dissolve the Sticky Buildup. For sticky spots or built-up grime, lightly dampen a microfiber cloth with warm water. Wring it nearly dry before wiping the slats. Too much moisture can warp wood blinds or damage fabric treatments.
  5. Don't Forget the Backside. Turn the blinds completely in the opposite direction to expose the other side of each slat. Repeat the vacuuming and wiping process. This side often collects different types of dirt and may need extra attention.
  6. Polish the Hardware. Use a slightly damp cloth to wipe down the top headrail where dust accumulates. Clean the pull cords and tilt wand with a dry cloth. These areas are often overlooked but collect oils from hands and airborne dust.
  7. Let Air Do the Work. Open the blinds halfway to allow air circulation and ensure any remaining moisture evaporates completely. This prevents water spots and potential warping of the slats.
