How to Clean Window Tracks and Weep Holes

Clean window tracks with a vacuum, brush, and damp cloth, then clear weep holes with a thin wire or compressed air to ensure proper drainage and smooth window operation.

Vacuum Out the Grime. Start by opening the window fully to access both tracks. Use a handheld vacuum or shop vac with a crevice tool attachment to suck out loose dirt, leaves, dead bugs, and accumulated grime. Pay special attention to the corners where debris tends to collect most heavily.
Break the Buildup Loose. Take an old toothbrush or small scrub brush and work along the entire length of both tracks. Focus on stubborn buildup and use firm pressure to dislodge caked-on dirt. For really tough spots, dip the brush in warm soapy water. The brush bristles will reach into the track grooves where your vacuum couldn't reach.
Flush the Tracks Clean. Use a clean, damp microfiber cloth or paper towel to wipe away the loosened dirt and soap residue. Fold the cloth to create a thin edge that fits into the track channels. Rinse and wring out the cloth as needed to avoid spreading dirt around.
Unblock the Drainage Path. Look for small holes along the bottom of the window frame, usually on the exterior side. These weep holes allow water to drain out. Use a thin piece of wire, a straightened paper clip, or a small drill bit to gently poke through each hole and clear any blockages. You should feel the wire go through easily when the hole is clear.
Confirm Flow and Glide. Pour a small amount of water into the track to test that it drains properly through the weep holes. If water pools, recheck the holes for blockages. Once drainage is confirmed, apply a small amount of silicone spray lubricant to the tracks to help windows slide smoothly.
Verify Smooth Operation. Wipe down the window sill and surrounding frame to remove any dirt or water. Close and open the window several times to ensure it operates smoothly and that you haven't left any cleaning materials behind that could interfere with the window mechanism.
