How to Clean Window Tracks Properly

Clean window tracks by removing loose debris with a vacuum, scrubbing with a toothbrush and soapy water, then wiping dry with a cloth.

  1. Vacuum Away the Grime. Use a vacuum cleaner with a crevice attachment to suck out dirt, leaves, dead bugs, and loose grime from the tracks. Work from one end to the other, getting into all the corners and channels. If you don't have a crevice attachment, use a small brush or old toothbrush to sweep debris toward one end, then vacuum it up.
  2. Attack Buildup with Soap. Mix warm water with a few drops of dish soap in a small bowl. For stubborn buildup, add a tablespoon of white vinegar. Dip an old toothbrush into the solution and scrub along the entire length of each track. Pay extra attention to the corners where dirt collects. The bristles will work the cleaning solution into grooves and remove stuck-on grime.
  3. Dissolve the Tough Stuff. For heavy dirt or paint buildup, make a paste with baking soda and water. Apply it to problem areas and let it sit for 10 minutes. Scrub with the toothbrush, then wipe away with a damp cloth. For really tough spots, use a plastic scraper or old credit card to gently remove buildup without scratching the track.
  4. Eliminate Every Drop. Wipe down the tracks with a clean, damp cloth to remove all soap residue. Use cotton swabs or a thin cloth wrapped around a butter knife to get into narrow channels. Dry completely with a clean towel, making sure no water remains in the tracks since standing water can cause rust or mold.
  5. Smooth the Glide Path. Once everything is clean and dry, apply a thin layer of silicone spray lubricant to the tracks. This helps windows slide smoothly and prevents dirt from sticking as easily. Wipe away any excess lubricant with a cloth so it doesn't attract more dirt.
