How to Install Peel and Stick Floor Tiles

Clean the floor thoroughly, mark your starting point at the room's center, then peel the backing and stick tiles one by one, working outward in a grid pattern.

  1. Clean and Level First. Remove all furniture and sweep thoroughly. Mop with degreasing cleaner and let dry completely. Fill any cracks or holes with wood filler or floor leveling compound. The surface must be clean, dry, and level for tiles to adhere properly.
  2. Map Your Starting Point. Measure the length and width of the room, then mark the midpoint of each wall with chalk. Snap chalk lines between opposite midpoints to create crossing lines. This intersection is your starting point and ensures even borders around the room.
  3. Test Before Sticking. Place tiles along your chalk lines without removing the backing paper. This shows you how the pattern will look and where you'll need to cut border tiles. Adjust your starting point if needed to avoid very thin border pieces.
  4. Set Your First Anchor. Start at the center intersection. Peel the backing paper from your first tile and position one corner at the intersection point. Lower the tile slowly, smoothing from center outward to prevent air bubbles. This tile sets the pattern for everything else.
  5. Build Outward Symmetrically. Install tiles adjacent to your first tile, building outward in all four directions. Keep the pattern square by checking alignment frequently. Press each tile firmly and run your hand over the surface to ensure good adhesion.
  6. Trim Edges to Fit. Measure the gap between the last full tile and the wall. Mark this measurement on a new tile and cut with a utility knife and straightedge. Score deeply, then snap along the line. Test fit before removing the backing.
  7. Set Everything Down Hard. Place all border pieces, ensuring tight fits against walls. Use a rolling pin or tile roller to press down all tiles firmly. Walk over the entire floor to check for loose spots and press down any areas that feel soft or unstuck.
