How to Organize Under a Bathroom Sink
Clutter under the bathroom sink is the inevitable result of gravity and forgetfulness. Because this space often contains plumbing pipes and limited floor area, it tends to become a dark, disorganized heap of half-empty bottles and forgotten toiletries. A well-organized cabinet isn't just about aesthetics; it is about reclaiming access to the items you actually reach for every morning. To do this properly, you must move from a pile-based system to a zone-based system. By utilizing the vertical space between the sink basin and the cabinet floor and implementing containment for loose items, you transform a chaotic void into a high-functioning storage area that saves you time and prevents duplicate purchases.
- Empty and Assess Everything. Empty the entire cabinet onto the floor. Check every expiration date and discard any products that have gone bad or haven't been touched in over a year.
- Scrub the Cabinet Clean. Vacuum any dust or loose hair from the cabinet base. Wipe down the floor and walls with an all-purpose cleaner to remove soap scum or moisture buildup.
- Map the Pipe Obstacles. Measure the distance from the floor to the bottom of the sink drain pipes and the depth of the cabinet. Note where the P-trap sits so you don't buy an organizer that blocks it.
- Slide Smart Storage In. Place stackable or pull-out drawers on one side of the cabinet to handle heavy items like hair dryers or cleaning supplies. Secure them with adhesive strips if the cabinet base is slick.
- Maximize Door Real Estate. Affix an over-the-door caddy or adhesive pockets to the interior of the cabinet door. Use this for lightweight, flat items like brushes, combs, or small tubes of toothpaste.
- Label and Contain Everything. Group remaining items into clear bins labeled by category, such as 'Dental,' 'First Aid,' or 'Hair Care.' Place these on the cabinet floor under the shelving units.
