How to Fix a Bifold Closet Door That Won't Close

Most bifold doors won't close due to misaligned tracks, bent hinges, or worn pivot pins that need adjustment or replacement.

  1. Verify Track Runs Straight. Look at the top track where the door hangs. The track should be perfectly straight and securely mounted. If it's sagging or pulled away from the ceiling, tighten the mounting screws. Use a level to ensure the track runs straight across the opening. A crooked track will prevent the door from sliding smoothly into the closed position.
  2. Find the Source of Binding. The bottom of the door sits on a pivot pin in a floor bracket. Check if this pin is properly seated in its bracket and hasn't worked loose. If the pin is bent or the bracket is damaged, the door will bind and refuse to close completely. Remove the door by lifting it up slightly and pulling the bottom away from the wall to access this hardware.
  3. Secure Every Hinge Connection. Bifold doors have hinges connecting the two panels. These hinges can become loose, bent, or clogged with debris. Open and close the door while watching the hinge action. Tighten any loose screws and clean out dirt or paint buildup. If a hinge is bent beyond repair, replace it with an identical hinge from the hardware store.
  4. Fine-Tune Door Position. The top pivot bracket usually has adjustment screws that let you move the door in and out from the wall. If the door is rubbing against the frame or not sitting flush when closed, use these screws to fine-tune the position. Turn clockwise to move the door closer to the wall, counterclockwise to move it away.
  5. Detect Panel Warping. Look down the length of each door panel to see if it has warped or twisted. A warped door will never close properly no matter how well the hardware works. Minor warping can sometimes be corrected by adjusting the pivot points, but severely warped doors need replacement.
  6. Smooth All Moving Parts. Apply a small amount of white lithium grease or 3-in-1 oil to the pivot pins, hinges, and track. Wipe away excess lubricant to prevent dirt accumulation. Work the door back and forth several times to distribute the lubricant and check if this solves the closing problem.
  7. Verify Smooth Operation. After making adjustments, test the door by opening and closing it multiple times. The door should glide smoothly and close completely without binding or gaps. Make small additional adjustments to the pivot brackets as needed until the door operates perfectly.
