How to Fix a Squeaky Door

Most squeaky doors can be fixed by lubricating the hinges with oil, soap, or petroleum jelly, which takes just a few minutes.

  1. Find the Squeaky Culprit. Open and close the door slowly while listening carefully. The squeak usually comes from the hinge pins or pivot points. Look for any visible rust, dirt, or worn areas on the hinges.
  2. Strip Away the Grime. Wipe down all hinge surfaces with a damp cloth to remove dirt, dust, and old grease. Use an old toothbrush to scrub away stubborn grime from the hinge pin and pivot points. Dry completely before applying lubricant.
  3. Silence the Squeaky Pins. Place a few drops of household oil, bar soap rubbed directly on the pin, or a small amount of petroleum jelly on each hinge pin. Work the door back and forth several times to distribute the lubricant. The squeaking should stop immediately.
  4. Coat the Pivot Points. Apply lubricant where the hinge plates meet and pivot against each other. Focus on any areas where metal rubs against metal. Move the door slowly to work the lubricant into all contact points.
  5. Verify the Silence. Open and close the door completely several times to ensure the squeak is gone and the lubricant is properly distributed. If squeaking persists, apply more lubricant or check for loose screws that might be causing misalignment.
  6. Wipe Down the Excess. Wipe away any excess oil or petroleum jelly from the hinges and door frame to prevent dirt accumulation. Leave just enough lubricant to keep the hinges moving smoothly.
