How to Fix a Door That Won't Latch

A door that won't latch is usually caused by misaligned strike plates, worn latches, or door frame settling. Most fixes involve adjusting the strike plate position or filing the latch mechanism.

  1. Find the Misalignment. Close the door slowly and watch where the latch bolt hits the strike plate. The latch should slide smoothly into the strike plate hole. If it hits above, below, or to the side of the opening, you've found your alignment issue. Check if the door has sagged by measuring the gap between the door and frame at the top and bottom.
  2. Lubricate and Test. Open the door and test the door handle. The latch bolt should extend and retract smoothly when you turn the handle. If it sticks or doesn't move fully, spray a small amount of graphite lubricant or 3-in-1 oil into the latch mechanism. Work the handle several times to distribute the lubricant.
  3. Reposition the Strike Plate. If the latch hits above or below the strike plate hole, you'll need to move the strike plate. Remove the screws holding the strike plate to the door frame. Use a wood chisel to carefully extend the mortise (the rectangular cutout) in the direction the plate needs to move. Reposition the strike plate and mark new screw holes if needed. Drill pilot holes and reinstall with longer screws if the original holes are enlarged.
  4. Enlarge the Latch Opening. For minor alignment issues, you can enlarge the strike plate opening slightly. Remove the strike plate and use a metal file to carefully expand the hole in the direction needed. File gradually and test frequently by reinstalling the plate and trying the door. Remove only small amounts of metal at a time.
  5. Shim the Hinges. If the door has sagged and the gap at the bottom is significantly larger than at the top, you may need to adjust the hinges. Tighten all hinge screws first. If that doesn't work, remove the middle hinge and place a thin cardboard shim behind it before reinstalling. This will push the middle of the door out slightly and help realign the latch.
  6. Perfect the Latch Action. After making adjustments, test the door several times. The latch should engage smoothly without having to slam the door or lift the handle. If there's still slight misalignment, make small additional adjustments to the strike plate position or continue filing the opening gradually until the door latches properly.
