How to Remove Tough Stains from Carpet

Most tough carpet stains can be removed using targeted cleaning solutions and proper blotting techniques, working from the outside of the stain inward to prevent spreading.

  1. Blot, Don't Rub. Blot up any excess liquid immediately with clean paper towels or cloth. Don't rub or scrub, as this pushes the stain deeper into the fibers. Identify the stain type if possible - protein stains like blood need cold water, while grease stains require different treatment. Test any cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area of carpet first to check for color bleeding or damage.
  2. Mix Your Weapon. For general stains, mix 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap with 2 cups warm water. For grease stains, use 1 part white vinegar to 1 part warm water. For protein stains like blood or vomit, mix 1 tablespoon ammonia with 1/2 cup cold water. For wine or juice stains, combine 1 tablespoon white vinegar, 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap, and 2 cups warm water.
  3. Let Chemistry Work. Spray or pour a small amount of your cleaning solution onto the stain. Don't oversaturate the carpet, as this can damage the backing and pad underneath. Let the solution sit for 5-10 minutes to break down the stain. For older, set-in stains, you may need to let it sit for up to 30 minutes.
  4. Work Outside In. Using a clean cloth or paper towels, blot the stain from the outside edges toward the center. Apply gentle pressure and lift straight up - never rub in circular motions. For stubborn stains, use a soft-bristled brush to gently work the cleaning solution into the carpet fibers, then continue blotting. Replace your blotting material frequently to avoid spreading the stain.
  5. Remove All Residue. Once the stain lifts, rinse the area with clean water to remove soap residue, which can attract dirt if left behind. Blot up as much moisture as possible with dry towels. For deep cleaning, use a wet/dry vacuum to extract remaining water and cleaning solution from the carpet fibers and pad.
  6. Dry Completely. Place several layers of clean, dry towels over the cleaned area and weigh them down with heavy objects for several hours. Replace towels as they become saturated. Once completely dry, vacuum the area to restore the carpet's texture. For high-traffic areas, consider placing a fan nearby to speed drying and prevent mold growth.
