How to Replace Window Weather Stripping

Remove old weather stripping by pulling it out of its channel, clean the area thoroughly, then press new stripping firmly into place, ensuring complete contact around the window frame.

  1. Strip Away the Old. Open the window completely to access all areas. Grab one end of the old weather stripping and pull it out of its channel or groove. Work your way around the entire window frame, removing all pieces. Some adhesive-backed stripping may require gentle scraping with a putty knife to remove stubborn residue.
  2. Clear the Path. Use a stiff brush or vacuum to remove dirt, debris, and old adhesive from the channels where the weather stripping sits. Wipe down with a damp cloth and let dry completely. Clean channels ensure proper adhesion and a tight seal.
  3. Measure Twice, Cut Once. Measure each section of the window frame where weather stripping is needed. Most windows require stripping on three sides for single-hung windows or four sides for casement windows. Add a few extra inches to each measurement to account for trimming.
  4. Precision Cuts Matter. Using sharp scissors or a utility knife, cut each piece of weather stripping to the measured lengths. Make clean, straight cuts to ensure proper fit. For foam tape, compress slightly while cutting for cleaner edges.
  5. Seal the Gaps Now. Starting with the bottom piece, press the weather stripping firmly into the channel or apply to the frame surface. Work methodically around the window, ensuring the stripping makes continuous contact without gaps. For adhesive-backed types, remove the backing paper gradually as you apply pressure.
  6. Confirm Smooth Operation. Close and open the window several times to check that it operates smoothly and the weather stripping maintains good contact. The window should close with slight resistance from the new stripping but not require excessive force. Trim any excess material that interferes with operation.
