How to Paint Exposed Attic Rafters

By Sam | HowTo: Home Edition | Spring 2026

The ceiling you've been ignoring is actually the best design move in the room.

Exposed rafters are the bones of the room. Painting them, especially in a dark, rich color, is one of the few DIY projects that makes a space feel intentional instead of unfinished.

Before you buy a single drop cloth, inspect the raw wood, the spaces between rafters, insulation, old wiring, HVAC runs, and any signs of moisture. Fix moisture first. Then clean, sand, prime with shellac, mask, brush tight spots, roll flat faces, and plan for two coats over two days.
