How to Install Pull-Out Shelving Under a Vanity

Vanity cabinets are notorious for becoming dark, deep voids where cleaning supplies and toiletries go to disappear. Installing pull-out shelving transforms this awkward space by bringing the back of the cabinet to you, ensuring that nothing gets lost in the plumbing dark zones. A successful installation relies entirely on squaring your tracks and clearing the pipes. When done well, the shelf operates smoothly without catching on the cabinet frame or interfering with the drain trap, effectively turning a cramped bathroom storage area into a high-functioning organizer.

  1. Clear the Space First. Empty the vanity completely and measure the floor area, specifically noting the location of the P-trap plumbing. Ensure your intended shelf width leaves at least an inch of clearance from the drain pipes.
  2. Align Tracks Perfectly. Position the drawer slides according to the manufacturer's manual. Mark the screw holes with a pencil while ensuring the slides are perfectly parallel to each other.
  3. Drill Before Fastening. Pilot drill small holes into the vanity floor to prevent wood splitting. Screw the slide tracks firmly into the base of the cabinet using the provided mounting hardware.
  4. Build Square, Build Right. Build the shelf box or attach the pre-fabricated tray to the sliding glides that attach to the tracks. Tighten all fasteners to ensure the box is square and rigid.
  5. Test Smooth Operation. Align the shelf glides with the floor tracks and slide them into place. Test the movement repeatedly to ensure no binding occurs.
  6. Smooth the Final Details. Fully extend and retract the shelf several times under a light load. Adjust the cabinet hinges if the shelf face rubs against the vanity door frame.
