How to Fix a Loose Door Knob
Most loose door knobs can be fixed by tightening the screws that hold the handle and mechanism together, or by adjusting the set screws on the collar.
- Know Your Knob Type. Look at your door knob to determine if it has visible screws on the faceplate or if it's a modern knob with hidden screws. Older knobs typically have two screws visible on one side, while newer ones have a small slot or button on the collar that hides the attachment mechanism.
- Crank Down the Fasteners. If you can see screws on the door knob faceplate, use a screwdriver to tighten them by turning clockwise. Hold the knob steady on the opposite side while tightening to prevent it from spinning. Start with light pressure and gradually increase until the knob feels secure.
- Unlock the Hidden Screws. For knobs without visible screws, look for a small slot, button, or set screw on the collar near the door. Press the button or insert a small flathead screwdriver into the slot while pulling the knob straight off. You'll see the attachment screws underneath that can be tightened with a screwdriver.
- Realign the Strike Plate. If the knob still feels loose after tightening screws, check if the latch is properly aligned with the strike plate on the door frame. The door may have settled over time, causing misalignment. Loosen the strike plate screws, adjust its position slightly, and retighten.
- Restore Stripped Holes. If tightening screws doesn't solve the problem, the screw holes may be stripped or the internal mechanism worn out. For stripped holes, remove the knob, fill holes with wooden toothpicks and wood glue, let dry, then reinstall. For worn mechanisms, replace the entire knob set.
- Confirm Rock-Solid Function. Turn the knob several times and open and close the door to ensure it operates smoothly. The knob should feel solid with no wiggling, and the latch should engage properly with the strike plate. Make final adjustments if needed.
