How to Replace a Door Threshold

Remove the old threshold by cutting through screws or nails, measure and cut a new threshold to fit, then secure it with screws and seal the edges with caulk.

  1. Clear Access First. Take the door off its hinges to give yourself clear access to the threshold. Tap out the hinge pins with a hammer and nail set, starting with the bottom hinge. Have someone help you lift the door away and set it aside safely.
  2. Cut and Pry Out. Use a reciprocating saw or oscillating multi-tool to cut through the screws or nails holding the threshold in place. Make cuts near each end of the threshold, being careful not to damage the door frame or flooring. Pry out the old threshold with a pry bar.
  3. Make It Level. Scrape away old caulk, debris, and any protruding fasteners from the threshold area. Vacuum out all loose material and check that the subfloor is level and solid. Replace any damaged wood before proceeding.
  4. Cut to Perfect Fit. Measure the exact width of the door opening and mark your new threshold. Use a miter saw or circular saw to cut the threshold to length. Test fit it in place and trim as needed for a snug fit between the door jambs.
  5. Secure and Screw. Apply a bead of construction adhesive to the subfloor where the threshold will sit. Position the threshold and secure it with 3-inch deck screws every 8-12 inches, drilling pilot holes first. Countersink the screw heads slightly below the surface.
  6. Seal for Weather. Apply exterior-grade caulk along both edges where the threshold meets the door jambs and any gaps at the flooring. Smooth the caulk with your finger for a clean finish. Allow everything to cure before reinstalling the door.
