How to Replace a Storm Door Handle

Remove the old handle by unscrewing the mounting screws from inside the door, then install the new handle by threading the spindle through and securing with screws.

  1. Unscrew and Remove Interior Handle. Start inside your home and locate the screws holding the interior handle plate to the door. These are usually two Phillips head screws. Remove them completely and pull the interior handle away from the door. The handle should come off easily once the screws are out.
  2. Slide Out the Spindle. Move to the outside of the door and gently pull the exterior handle straight out from the door. The spindle mechanism should slide out through the hole in the door. If it sticks, wiggle it slightly while pulling to work it free.
  3. Clear the Mounting Surface. Wipe down the area around the handle hole on both sides of the door. Remove any dirt, debris, or old adhesive residue. This ensures your new handle will sit flush and operate smoothly.
  4. Thread the New Spindle. Take your new exterior handle and push the spindle through the hole from the outside. Make sure the handle sits flat against the door surface. The spindle should extend through to the interior side of the door.
  5. Secure with Interior Plate. From inside the door, slide the interior handle onto the spindle until it sits flush against the door. Line up the screw holes and insert the mounting screws. Tighten them firmly but don't over-tighten, as this can crack the handle or strip the threads.
  6. Verify Smooth Operation. Turn the handle from both sides to make sure it moves smoothly and engages the latch properly. Open and close the door several times to verify everything works correctly. The handle should return to its original position when released.
